Gundam Japanese Anime Series

Written by praveen on March 25, 2008 – 2:47 pm - 61 People Read this!

The Gundam is nothing but one of the most popular Japanese animation series. It is a huge phenomenon and most influential series in the history of animation. This is the name or nickname of several mobile suits or mobile fighters created to satisfy the anime world. This series features giant robots and machines capable of displaying human like intelligence. Gundam is popularly known through its Universal Century series, which is a pack of several offshoots such as Mobile Suit, Wing, Gundam X, and Mobile suit 00 etc. Yoshiyuki Tomino along with Sunrise creators had initially created the series. Majority of earlier Gundam’s work occurs in the calendar of Universal Century. The name Gundam was given by Tomino. It was originated from the word “Gun boy” and “Freedom”. It signifies robots or machines powerful enough to hold the enemies back and defeat them.

All the Gundam anime stories centrally depict the cruel, wicked and savage act of war. Gundams are large vehicles controlled by human pilots known as Gundam fighters. Generally they are non sentimental, but few of them behave differently. Animations of these fighters and their controllers are so brilliantly designed that it becomes too difficult to imagine that they are not natural! The machines and Gundams are portrayed in a realistic way. Gundams encounter with short supplies of arms, ammunitions and energies during course of their operation, but still they manage to survive. Technologies behind the machines are based on real science. The machines had even collapsed at times. The turn of events gradually develop the characters. As the story unfolds, the point of view, thinking and actions sometimes changes dramatically and makes the plot interesting. Some characters achieve their goals, whereas some others change their alliances for that very purpose. So, we find that there is no absolute hero or villain present in the title. All philosophical and political issues of history are discussed and debated in the Gundam series along with the ones that may come up in future.

Gundam is considered as prototype for all realistic, mature robot / mecha series. In spite of the outdated drawings, it perfectly balances and portrays great characterization, stories and fierce battles by the mobile suits. The main content in this series is the underlying philosophical themes and massages that even deals with today’s issues on war. The war does not contain any simple good vs. evil conflict between the Zeon and the Earth Federation. This makes Gundam more complex and realistic as possible. It is a true monumental animation ever produced.

Bubblegum Crisis

Written by praveen on March 9, 2008 – 11:09 am - 81 People Read this!

Bubblegum Crisis is labeled as one of the most famous and classical animation titles of Japan. The original Japanese series was released in February 1987 and was greatly influenced by Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Original Bubblegum Crisis series sold poorly in Japan but did fairly well in the United States. There are eight episodes in the series. Creators of Bubblegum Crisis were overwhelmed by the responses and appreciations from the fan followers. As consequences, the original episode was followed by seven more episodes, which were based on the story and concept of the original. All eight episodes of the Bubblegum Crisis were a huge hit. Continuing success in marketing the anime prompted creators to extend the story to 13 more episodes to conclude the story. But eventually, they could not succeed as the original production company was paralyzed by financial problems. Another company came forward producing Bubblegum Crash consisting of three episodes with an attempt to tie up the loose plot ends of Bubblegum Crisis series.

The Bubblegum Crisis series begins with the rebuilding of Mega Tokyo city, which was destroyed by the second great Kanto earthquake of 2025. While rebuilding of city was underway in 2032, the Genom Corporation became a major world power. They had first introduced the Boomer technology, which is a combination of robotics, cyber and artificial intelligence. Doctor Katsuhito Stingray initially developed the Boomer technology but was shortly killed in a lab accident after initial development of the boomers. The Bubblegum series described life of early 2030’s. The Genom Corporation projected themselves as saviors of the world, but in reality, they were far from that. They started controlling global economy and became a potential threat to the future of humanity. In order to counter the danger, Doctor Stingray’s daughter, Sylia, formed the Knight Sabers to counter their plans, because neither the government nor the police could resist the plans of Genom. The story of Bubblegum Crisis hangs around the above-mentioned plot. The concept of Boomers in Bubblegum Crisis got the inspiration from the movie, Blade Runner.

Bubblegum Crisis is a classic Japanese animation that lives up to the expectations of the people. The animation has beautiful women, fights, villains and interesting dialogues, which capture the imagination in a way that very few animation story does. The premise of Bubblegum Crisis is based on literary classic such as Frankenstein. But the execution in Bubblegum Crisis is flashy and neo-modern, which also gives a precious look at humankind’s current state of alienation amidst its own technology.

Card Captor Sakura

Written by praveen on March 8, 2008 – 6:07 pm - 47 People Read this!

Card Captor Sakura is a fun and action packed animation series. The CLAMP animation series, Card Captor Sakura, was originally broadcasted by NHK in 1998. Though the series is built especially for young viewers, but it is equally pleasurable for viewers of all age groups. The wonderfully imaginative series centers on a fourth grader, namely Kinomoto Sakura. Flow of animation is smooth and builds a clear initial image of Sakura as well as Cerberus. After its initial release, the Card Captor Sakura series has been adapted into multiple versions such as English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.

Name of the animation, Card Captor Sakura, portrays plot of the story. The story is based on a virtual world similar to Japan and is around the year of 1990. Main character of the animation story is Sakura, an innocent and cute girl. Guardian of the Seal, Kerberos, appointed her as Card Captor when she accidentally opens the magical book of Clow Cards and scatters them to the winds. She was to capture all of the Clow Cards with the help of her friend Tomoyo and Kerberos so that those powerful cards might not cause any harm to the world. Along with Kero, guardian of the cards and Tomoyo, her best friend, Sakura had ventured out to find all the cards. The whole story of Card Captor Sakura is based on the above plot.

Though, the story of Card Captor Sakura has a set formula, yet it stays bold and interesting because of the way the characters are portrayed. All the characters are just cute, especially Sakura, the main character of the story, is just suitable to lead the anime! First appearance of Keroberos, guardian of the clow cards, is just awesome. It is like a teddy bear, which is not able to change the true form up until the first half (precisely) of the story. The flow of animation, Card Captor Sakura, is smooth and event driven. The comic antics of Kero and Shouran make the mood change entertaining. Though, initially Card Captor Sakura may looks like a typical animation for kids, but once the full story is known, it becomes interesting for all.
